City University of Hong Kong is one of eight higher education institutions
directly funded by the Government of the Hong Kong Special Administrative
Region through the University Grants Committee (Hong Kong). It aims to become
one of the leading universities in the Asia-Pacific region through excellence
in professional education and applied research. In two studies, City
University of Hong Kong ranks among the top 200 universities in the world, and
among the top ten universities in the Greater China region. The mission of
the University is to nurture and develop the talents of students and to create
applicable knowledge in order to support social and economic advancement. The
student population is approximately 23,000 enrolled in over 100 programmes at
the associate degree, undergraduate and postgraduate levels. The medium of
instruction is English.

The University invites applications for posts of Assistant Professors in the
Department of Chinese, Translation and Linguistics. Candidates with applied
research achievements will receive very positive consideration. Relevant
experience in business and industry will be a definite asset.


Duties

Teach and supervise students at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels,
including BA, MA, MPhil and PhD in the following areas: (a) Chinese; (b)
Translation; (c) Linguistics; (d) Korean Studies; (e) Japanese Studies.
Candidates with a proven record of publications or strong research potential
preferred.


Requirements

For post (a), a PhD degree in Chinese or related disciplines. Able to
undertake teaching and research in one or more of the following areas: Modern
Chinese Language and Literature; Classical Chinese. Strong research ability
and a good command of English required.

For post (b), a PhD degree in Translation, Comparative Literature or related
disciplines. Able to undertake teaching and research in one or more of the
following areas: Comparative Cultural Studies; Translation Studies,
Interpretation; Language and Law ¨C legal translation, legal writing and
bilingual legal drafting. Strong research ability, native or near native
fluency in English and Chinese (Putonghua or Cantonese for spoken Chinese, and
Modern Standard Chinese for written Chinese), and a good knowledge of Chinese
studies required.

For post (c), a PhD degree in Linguistics or related disciplines. Able to
undertake teaching and research in one or more of the following areas:
Phonetics, Phonology, Syntax, Semantics and Discourse, and experience in the
comparative analysis of at least two languages, preferably Chinese, and either
English, Japanese or Korean required.

For post (d), a PhD degree in Linguistics, or East Asian Studies with emphasis
on the Korean Language. Able to undertake teaching and research in areas of
Korean language linguistics and culture. Teaching experience at university
level in Korean language and culture preferred.

For post (e), a PhD degree in Linguistics, or East Asian Studies with emphasis
on the Japanese Language. Able to undertake teaching and research in areas of
Japanese language linguistics and culture. Teaching experience at university
level in Japanese language and culture preferred.

For all posts, the ability to work well with colleagues is essential.

Salary and Conditions of Service
Salary offered will be highly competitive and commensurate with qualifications
and experience. Appointment will be on a fixed-term contract with
contract-end gratuity. Fringe benefits include annual leave, medical and
dental schemes, and housing benefits where applicable.
